BAND-AIDS FOR BOO-BOOS
BAND-AIDS FOR BOO-BOOS was inspired by our friend, Rachel Glincher. Rachel has always enjoyed helping others. When she was little, she donated her hair to Locks of Love. As a teenager, she was a captain for Relay for Life and volunteered at Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for kids with cancer. Rachel was a wonderful example of the OINK philosophy: It feels good to give …THE POWER OF KIDS HELPING THE WORLD.
Rachel is still giving. She is now a Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON) at Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital in New York. She is a recipient of the Daisy Award, which is given to extraordinary nurses. She has spent some of her “spare” time volunteering her nursing skills at Camp Pals, a summer camp for children with Down’s Syndrome
When Rachel heard what Madison and Emma were planning to do with OINK, she suggested a Band-Aid drive. Rachel said, “My patients are so brave…they endure chemotherapy and countless needle sticks. One thing that brings a big smile to their faces is having their special Band-Aid ready and waiting. Sometimes all a kid needs to focus on is that Dora™ or Sponge Bob™ will be there when that needle comes out. After all, kids with illnesses are still kids, and some days they need Hello Kitty™ or Nemo™ to help take the sting away.”
Emma and Madison started to brainstorm how they could get the beloved character Band-Aids to the kids at Rachel’s hospital. They put flyers in local Nursery and Elementary Schools suggesting that the students ask for a box of their favorite children’s character Band-Aids to donate. They also distributed donation boxes to local libraries and businesses. Over one thousand Band-Aids were collected. OINK CHARITIES had the Band-Aids delivered to Maimonides Infants and Children’s Hospital in New York. The photo above is of our friend Rachel (in the yellow pants) and her fellow nurses with some of the donated Band-Aids.
